A homemade isotonic drink can provide water, carbohydrates and sodium during a long ride or a demanding indoor session. The recipe may seem simple, but the ratios matter. A mixture that is too concentrated can feel heavy on the stomach, while adding too little energy limits its usefulness when the effort is prolonged.
Home preparation does not make it possible to confirm a drink’s osmolarity, so the term isotonic should be understood as a practical approximation of a sports drink. What a cycling drink should provide
Water replaces fluids, carbohydrates provide usable energy, and sodium helps maintain the urge to drink and replace some of what is lost through sweat. A carbohydrate concentration close to 5-8% is common in sports drinks. This means providing between 50 and 80 grams per litre. Mix one litre of water with 60 grams of sugar and 1.5 grams of table salt. That amount of sugar produces an approximate concentration of 6%. Regular sugar combines glucose and fructose, making it suitable for a basic recipe. There is no need to add honey, bicarbonate, magnesium or several juices. When it is worth drinking
For an easy session of less than one hour, performed in mild conditions and when starting well hydrated, water only is usually enough. A carbohydrate drink makes more sense when training exceeds about one hour, includes demanding intervals, takes place in the heat or is part of a day with little time to eat.
Start drinking from the early stages of a long session, taking regular sips instead of waiting until you are very thirsty and emptying the bottle all at once. How to combine it with gels and food

Common mistakes with homemade mixtures
The first mistake is improvising the amounts. A bottle loaded with sugar, juice and honey can easily exceed the intended concentration. The second is confusing sodium with salt: 1.5 grams of salt are not 1.5 grams of sodium. It is also best to avoid very acidic drinks if you know they cause gastrointestinal discomfort.
This recipe is a sports drink and does not replace an oral rehydration solution indicated for diarrhoea, vomiting or illness. Nor can it compensate for severe dehydration while riding. If confusion, fainting, persistent vomiting or inability to drink occurs, stop exercising and seek medical attention.
How to test the recipe before the important day
First prepare one bottle and use it during a familiar session. Note how much you drank, the temperature, the effort, the taste and any discomfort.
